Free People "In the Kitchen with Lael Cakes"

Jana, from Free People came to our studio to chat cake and love. Read the full feature on their blog to get to know me a little bit better as I fill you in on my story and hand out a few decorating tips.

As soon as I saw the cake Emily had made for us, it all started to make sense. Beautiful home, beautiful cake, beautiful girl… her world is sweet, and it was so fun to get a taste of it that day.

She specializes in vegan, gluten-free, and dairy-free cakes that incorporate fresh and local flavors. As soon as I had the pleasure of taste-testing one of her cakes, the thought and innovation that goes into her recipes was apparent.

Her custom orders leave her busy on the decorating front, and I got to witness her art form first-hand. Layer by layer, I watched Emily decorate a naked cake and transform it into an edible masterpiece.

After being influenced by bakers in her family, Emily realized that it was possible to make a career out of doing what she loves, and thus, Lael Cakes was born.

New York Weddings summer 2015

"Spring is officially here, which means we'll soon be in the thick of wedding season. And, while planning to get hitched can be hard work, we can always count on New York Magazine's Weddings issue to offer some serious Big Day inspiration."  Refinery 29

Lael Cakes Gluten-Free Pumpkin and Ginger-Iced Flower Child Cake with roses, eucalyptus, and thistle.

Marlo + Sam

This gluten-free wedding cake was one of my favorites from last fall. It represented what, I personally think, all cake should--layers of scrumptious flavors with adornments of nature! The tiers consisted of: coconut cake with espresso buttercream + salted caramel sauce, chocolate cake with ganache + peanut butter buttercream, funfetti cake with cream cheese icing and lemon cake with vanilla bean buttercream. With flavor combos this good, the cake had to be naked.

I love how Marlo and Sam accented the cake table with their families' vintage cake toppers!

The Knot - winter 2014

So thrilled about our recent full page features in The Knot! One being a more traditionally iced tiered cake adorned in white sugar orchids, while the other is a modern crepe cake layered in fresh raspberry-rosewater icing.

All vegan and gluten-free, imagine that!
